LLG was contracted to develop the human interface portion of a new proprietary control system for facial animation and control of 3D characters for the children's television series, Jane and the Dragon.
The brief was specific: create an interface to a system which used a low-cost, off-the shelf control device and which also fit in with the Maya-based production pipeline.
Over a period of 8 months this system, code-named Pupazzare, was prototyped and developed into a functional pre-release version. The project was entirely built using Maya's embedded scripting language or MEL. Henson Studios has developed a similar approach, but their system employs haptic control surfaces, advanced computers and control software, whereas Pupazzare works with a generic PC game controller connected to a reasonably grunty Windows PC. The end result is a low-cost and fast workflow solution for puppeteering faces within the Jane and the Dragon production pipeline.
Jane and the Dragon started broadcast in early 2006.
