Tutorials at Lizard Lounge Graphics Lounge : NICKL- Period Noise : Temporal Looping

Temporal looping is looping over time. Simple right? Well yes actually, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind before you get going. Remember that if you are going to loop an animation cycle over time that you need to make sure that the frequency of NICKL's Period Noise is either the same as the duration of the animation sequence or is divisible into that by some given integer (whole number).

And that means what exactly?

OK - if your Period Noise is set with a Temporal Animation Period of 3 then the Period Noise function will repeat every 3 seconds. This means that your animation needs to be a duration that is a product of the period cycle in seconds. Remember also that you can adjust the speed of the Temporal Animation by using the Speed input. These three factors: Temporal Animation Speed, Period, and animation sequence duration all work together for determining the looping frequency of the NICKL's Period Noise.

You'll notice that a Temporal Animation Period of 1 results in a fairly easy to discern repeating visual motion. If you increase this by even a little bit to something like 3-5 seconds then you will find that it is harder to see the Period Noise repeat. Cranking it up to a 9 - 10 second cycle makes it really difficult to see the repeating function at all.

The left hand plane has Period Noise applied with a Temporal period setting of 1. You can see the function loop pretty clearly. The right hand plane has Period Noise applied with a higher Temporal period setting and it is a bit challenging to see the function loop without the visual cue of the playback head on the movie's controller.
